City Hires AssistantBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, April 22, 1998 in the Gurdon Times For several months there has been no administrative assistant for the City of Gurdon. This situation ended Wednesday, April 8, when Wendy Maxwell, formerly Wendy Simpson, was hired for the vacant position. Four applications were received for the spot, according to Gurdon Mayor Rick Smith, with all applicants being qualified. However, Maxwell was hired because she had the best experience in dealing with people, due to working with a bank and H&R Block. At the bank, Smith said, she handled business with the loan office, wrote business letters and worked with people. The decision of the Gurdon Personnel Committee to hire her was unanimous, he said. Her duties with the city will include assisting with administrative duties, writing and tracking grant applications, writing depositions for the Gurdon Police Department, help keep records for the Gurdon Fire Department, work with all departments within City Hall and do research for city projects. Maxwell earned a degree in computer office techniques from Southern Technical College in 1991. The Gurdon native graduated from Gurdon High in 1988. She is married to David Maxwell, a football coach with a nearby school district, and the couple has two children, Dillon, 5, and Rylee, 9 months. The Maxwells live in Gurdon and are currently renovating their home and landscaping their yard. In her spare time, Maxwell enjoys playing tennis and water skiing. She also likes to spend time with her family, camp, be outside, barbecue and have fish fries. She is the daughter of Gary and LaDawne Simpson of Gurdon. Tambra Smith, city recorder/treasurer, said they are excited to have Maxwell on board. "She's a local girl who is concerned about Gurdon," Smith said. "She was much needed and will do a good job for the city. I look forward to working with her." Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
