Wolverettes 4-2 In League PlayBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, April 22, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune Two years ago Prescott High School added softball to its list of spring sports. The Wolverettes have worked hard on their skills, with the effort paying dividends this season. As of Friday, the Wolverettes were 4-2 in league play and 5-5 overall, playing mostly doubleheaders. Their season opened with a 10-0 loss against Nashville March 12, and was followed by a pair of wins against Bismarck on March 30. Game one saw the Wolverettes hammer the Lady Lions 16-5 and post a 17-5 win in the second set. On April 3, the Wolverettes tangled with Fordyce, falling twice. Game one was lost 13-2, with the second outing having a score of 12-8. They faced De Queen April 4 in the Hope Tournament, but fell 17-6. They dropped their next tourney game to Camden 13-8. A trip to Blevins on April 8 produced a 7-6 win as the Wolverettes returned to their winning ways. Against Fountain Lake on April 13, they pasted the Lady Cobras 17-1 in the opener and 17-7 in the second game of the twin bill. The Wolverettes have some heavy hitters on the team as well. Leah Thornton boasts a whopping .740 average, but follows Laura Beth Williams, who has the team's best batting average at .750. Britt Woods also has a hot bat as she is hitting .667, while Andrea Cossey is no slouch with a stick, hitting .653. Mandy Cox is next with a .640 batting average, with the .600's being spent as Jessica Hendrix is hitting an even .600. Traci Graham has been helping the team with a .562 batting average, with Melissa Beavert following closely at .545. Jesna Cornelius comes next at .526, followed by Stacy Stockton's .520 average. This year will be the final year the Wolverettes compete in slow-pitch softball. Because of changes in Title IX regulations, there are college scholarships available for young ladies playing fast pitch softball. Next year, Prescott will join the ranks of fast pitch softball teams. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
