PRESCOTT 3Published Wednesday, April 22, 1998 in the Nevada County PicayuneFORDYCE 5 The Wolves dropped their second straight game Friday, a 5-3 decision against the Redbugs. This dropped Prescott's league record to 2-3, while Fordyce finished 5-1. De Queen ended the season without a conference loss at 6-0. Formby lost for the second time this season, going the full seven innings. He faced 35 batters, gave up 12 hits, five runs and three walks while striking 12 out. Neither team scored in the first inning, though the 'Bugs managed to get runners in scoring position. Prescott went down in order. Formby kept the 'Bugs under wraps in the second as well, but allowed two singles before striking out the side. The Wolves, on the other hand, drew first blood. Johnston started with a double and scored when Yates belted a single. Jernigan grounded into a 5-4-3 twin killing with Formby flying out to end the inning. Fordyce took the lead in the top of the third, starting with Morris's homer. Dorrell singled, stole second and went to third when the throw from the catcher went into center field. A wild pitch brought him home. Following this defensive gaff, the Wolves retired the next three in order. The bottom of the frame saw Prescott go down 1,2,3. The fifth was another quiet inning as pitching dominated. Formby faced three batters, fanning two. Prescott got a runner on when Yates was hit by a pitch with two down, but saw him stuck when Jernigan flied out. Inning five remained silent as well with the pitchers in control of the game. Each team got a runner to first, but left him stranded as the other batters couldn't advance him. Fordyce got some insurance runs in the sixth as three runners scored. Reynolds doubled to begin the attack, going to third on a Trudell fly ball. The throw from center wound up in the dugout, with Reynolds ending up at home. Singles then hurt Prescott. Wagnon, Williams and Morris all singled, with Swift getting a free ride. Morris's single brought Wagnon and Morris across. The Wolves were able to cut into the lead in their part of the inning, using the two-out rally to score. Collins and Ingram were fanned. Johnston then walked. Yates belted a single, accompanied by a wild pitch this allowed Johnston to score. The 'Bugs tried to extend their lead in the seventh, and very nearly did. Reynolds again tagged Formby for a double. Trudell walked to put runners at first and second. Wagnon singled and Reynolds was squashed trying to score as the ball went from Heath Duke to Jones to Jordan. Sims went down on strikes to end the inning. Trailing 5-2 the Wolves tried to rally. Brent Jordan and Formby singled. Hammrick was fanned and Jones singled to load the bases. Collins lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Jordan in, but the game ended with Ingram flying out. Crow said Formby's pitching was good enough to win a lot of games and the 12 K's was a season high for one outing. "He did a good job of holding a very good Fordyce hitting team to only five runs." Other highlights were Johnston's double and two runs. Yates going two for two and Brent Jordan's two for three effort at the plate. De Queen, finishing the regular season 6-0 in league play, will be the No. 1 seed in the district tournament next week in Nashville. The Leopards finished 19-1 overall. Prescott has a 2-3 league mark and is 10-3 overall. Where the Wolves finish in conference action was determined by Monday afternoon's game against Fouke.
