FOUKE 2

Saturday, April 25, the Wolves opened first round action in the 7AA District Baseball Tournament in Nashville.

The numbers 6 and 2 were again favored by Prescott as they whipped Fouke for the second time in five days by a score of 6-2.

This gives the Wolves a 12-3 record to date with the tourney continuing this week.

By beating Fouke Saturday, the Wolves qualified for the regional tournament in Fordyce May 4-6. Prescott will play Monday, May 4, but the time and foe are unknown at this time.

Formby has made it a habit to handle opposing batters. Against Fouke for round two, he again went the distance, facing 28 batters. He allowed two runs on seven hits and gave up two walks. He also struck six out.

For the first two innings, neither team was able to score. Both managed to get runners on, but couldn't get them in scoring position.

Fouke drew first blood this time in the top of the third. The inning began with Jones belting a single, Crabtree flied out and Jones was picked off first.

While it appeared as though the Wolves would get out of the inning unscathed, Attaway was issued the first of Formby's two walks. East then singled and Attaway scored on a throwing error.

Trailing the Panthers didn't set well with the Prescott players, who warmed up their bats to score twice in the bottom of the frame.

However, the Wolves had to do their scoring with two down as Jones grounded out and Ingram flied out.

Ingram did his part by smacking a single. This was followed by another one-bagger by Johnston, and a third by Yates to drive both Ingram and Johnston in. Jernigan ended the scoring by striking out.

Formby fanned Sewell to start the fourth, but Eaves reached on an error. Stout, though, grounded into one of Fouke's three double plays to end the inning.

Formby, Jordan and Overton all went to the plate in the bottom of the inning and all returned hitless.

The same song was sang for three different players in the fifth for Fouke as Formby retired the side in order.

Prescott, though, picked up four insurance runs in the bottom of the frame.

Jones started with a walk. Collins and Ingram were retired, before Johnston and Yates walked to pack the bags. Jones scored when Jernigan walked.

A wild pitch brought Johnston home, while Formby's single allowed Yates and Jernigan to finish the squared circle.

Jordan singled, but Overton batted into a fielder's choice with Formby being forced at third.

The Panthers tried to rally, but were only able to score a lone run in the top of the sixth.

Attaway singled and scored on a Foster single. Sewell was the third Panther to get a hit in the frame, but he and Foster watched as Eaves and Stout were retired.

Prescott did little in the bottom of the inning though two runners reached.

Formby walked Johnston and gave up a single to Jones to start the seventh. But, Crabtree went down on strikes and Attaway grounded into the third twin-killing to end the game.

Formby's nine wins ties him with Ross Cowling's mark set last season for the most wins in a single campaign.

Johnston went one for three, but scored twice. Yates was one for one at the plate, but drove two in. Formby was one of three with a pair of RBIs, while Brent Jordan was one of two at the plate.

The finals of the district tournament will be held at 3 p.m. today (Wednesday) with either Prescott or Nashville taking on De Queen.
