Snow Springs Meeting Is Well AttendedThe State WCG Convention was held May 1 and 2 at Snow SpringsPublished Wednesday, May 6, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesCampground in Hot Springs. Church of God Women from around the state gathered to enjoy a time of fellowship and worship. This year's theme was 'Ordinary Women-Extraordinary Purpose.' The May 1 daytime activities included a presentation by the Hope Center in Little Rock, a fashion show and the annual business meeting. The Gurdon Church of God gave $200 to the state project. The group enjoyed a banquet Friday evening. The guest speaker was Jon Mourglia from the Potter's House in Eureka Springs. He molded pottery as he spoke about the way God can mold everyone's lives if allowed to do so. Following Saturday's breakfast, the new state officers were installed. Janet Toland from was elected state parliamentarian. The Hope Center shared more about their program. The convention closed with devotion, prayer and communion. The Hope Center evolved from the prayers of a group of pastors who met each week to pray about the conditions in Southwest Little Rock. The Little Rock WCG formed partnerships with the Department of Human Services, directory area businesses and other Christian volunteers to be mentors for women involved in the Transitional Employment Assistance (TEA) program. The Hope Center helps these women develop the skills needed to enter the work force and become better parents and individuals. The women are taught skills such as filling out applications, having interviews, how to dress, improving self-concept, growing spiritually, parenting tips and moral living. Once the women complete the course, they are given assistance in finding housing and transportation. Area businesses and individuals donate items to furnish the home. This program has been a great success and they have hopes of branching out into other areas of Little Rock. Many of these women and their children have begun to attend church.
