Literacy Program Keeps GPS Busy

Published Wednesday, May 6, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

Gurdon Primary School students have been busy celebrating Literacy Week. They have read books, made posters, diaramas, decorated their classroom doors and they have worn decorated hats to say "hats off to reading."

The school's goal was to read 2,000 books, but the students exceeded that goal by reading 2,965 books.

Calicia Brown, a fourth grader, was the champion reader. She read 161 books and was the proud winner of the pig donated by Cargill Pork. Calicia has big plans for that pig, so be sure and look for it at the Clark County Fair in September. It will be the smartest pig there!

Art contest winners by grade level include:

Kindergarten first place, Marleigh Williams; second place, Shaquonda Walker; and third place winner was Matthew Marion.

First grade first place, Trevor Stone; second place, Marquette Govan; and third place, Donta Stephens.

Second grade first place, Tori Morehead; and second place, Sara Boyce.

Third grade first place winner was Christian Hopson.

Fourth grade first place, Jodi Swayze; and second place, Callie King.

"Creating lifelong readers and thinkers" is the mission of Gurdon Primary School, according to Rita Roe, principal at the school. "Hopefully, through such programs as this, that goal will be fulfilled and each student will benefit from having participated."
