Thomas Eugene White

Thomas Eugene White, 74, died Thursday, October 14, 1999, at Gooseankle, his home near Gurdon.

Mr. White was preceded in death by his father, Herman Thomas White, his mother, Ruthie Mae House White Jones and two brothers, Joe Herman White and Franklin Delano White.

Mr. White entered the U.S. Navy one week after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and served on the U.S.S. Phelps and U.S.S. Cape Esperance in the battles of the Coral Sea, Midway, Bougainville, Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Solomon Islands and Bering Sea. He received the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy medals for heroism by helping rescue survivors of the U.S.S. Lexington.

Survivors include two brothers, Edgar H. White of North Little Rock and Harold D. White of Van Buren; six nephews; and eleven nieces, Shirley Fetheroff, Ruth Marie Conklin, Mary Etta Peterson, Nancy Turly, Sandy Jones Baker, Joy and Janice Allison, Cheryl Hastings, Frankie Davidson, Kathy Monteith and Carla Jester.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 16, in the Horne Funeral Home chapel in Gurdon. Burial was in Liberty Cemetery near Prescott under the direction of Horne Funeral Home of Gurdon. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
