Porter Earns Honors

Published Wednesday, May 6, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune

Kara Porter, 17-year-old daughter of Mark and Sandra Porter, recently won eight awards at a twirling competition in Texarkana, Texas.

Porter, a junior at Prescott High School, competed in the dance twirl, twirling solo, best costume, twirl-off and high point event at the Bowie County Invitational Twirling Competition April 18.

She won five top ratings in the dance twirl and twirling solo events. In addition, she won the best costume, twirl-off and high point events.

The best costume event was judged specifically on the twirlers' costumes. Porter's costume was made of school colors: maroon, white and black. Her costume featured an array of rhinestones scattered among beaded motifs in a swirl design.

The twirlers who made a top rating were invited back at the conclusion of the competition for a twirl-off where the twirlers compete for top routine.

The high point trophy is given to the twirler who accumulated the most points during the course of the competition and entered the event. Porter received both of these awards.

Porter is a member of the PHS marching band and color guard and is active in other organizations.

She takes twirling lessons from Cari Maroon, a PHS teacher. Porter plans to enter twirling competitions in the future.

She also has been appointed to serve on the Arkansas Trauma Advisory Council.
