Bluff CityJerry McKelvyPublished Wednesday, October 20, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune Last week's news: I hope everyone paused to give thanks for the nice rain we received. A fellow named John Burroughs once said that rain is necessary to the mind as to the vegetation. Even when it interferes with our outside plans, it gives us the opportunity to slow down and catch up on maintenance or other things that need doing. Several in the community were on the sick list last week. Laverne Green was having trouble with a swollen leg and was not able to attend church on Sunday. Also Elloene McBride was sick at home. I hope all who were not feeling well have improved by now. Dr. Herbert Moore and his wife from Oklahoma City visited with Millard and Elloene McBride last week and attended church at Bluff City on Sunday. We usually have a few hunters from the Hot Springs area who take time out from their hunting duties to attend church while they are in the community. Sometimes we get a visitor who is camping at the state park. I have noticed that a new split rail fence has been installed at Poison Springs State Park and the facilities there have been improved. Visit the state parks sometimes and see what our tax money is paying for. Charles and Patricia Farr traveled to Nashville, Tenn., last week to visit their daughter, Le Ann. Bill and Kay Sellers enjoyed a trip to the deer camp last weekend. They both enjoy hunting and fishing. I'm not sure which one brings home the most meat. I was able to get one mess of turnip greens this year before the deer mowed them down like a lawnmower. A thought: Drag the Joneses down to your level. It's cheaper. This week's news: Laverne Green and Elloene McBride were feeling better at last report after a week or so of being under the weather. Kay Sellers recently made a trip to Galveston, Texas, to check on her brother who is in the hospital there. He is not doing too well at this time. Steve Beaver has planned a trip to Colorado to do some elk hunting. I'm not sure if he made it back yet. Jeanie and I just returned from a 1,300-mile trip through parts of five states. We were impressed with the good highways and friendly people in Tennessee and the lack of litter on the roads of Tennessee and Kentucky. The only beautiful fall colors we found were in Kentucky. In most places the leaves had just turned brown from the dry weather. We had some good food and some no so good. One of our last stops was at Sikeston, Mo., where we ate at Lambert's, the home of the throwed' rolls. Charles and Patricia Farr had returned from spending about a week in Nashville, Tenn. October is a favorite month for traveling and the highways and tourists places are busy. A thought: One good thing about growing old is that wrinkles don't hurt.
