CLASSY MOMENTS

Published Wednesday, May 13, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

The teachers at GMS really enjoyed the special attention that was given to them by the students in the observance of National Teachers Week. So many hugs were shared and remarks of "I appreciate you" said to the teachers from the students just made the week one of special importance.

The GMS Student Council pro-vided a sandwich luncheon with all of the trimmings to show their appreciation to the teachers. The Junior Beta Club gave each teacher a long stem rose. The thoughtfulness of these two clubs mean so much and are greatly appreciated.

We were entertained with magic Monday, and I do mean entertained. Randall the Magician kept the students spellbound with the various acts of magic he preformed. His assistant, Ed, kept the audience in laughter. We were holding our breath when we saw our own Stan the Man, (alias Stanley McClelland) put his head in the guillotine. Stan, you are so brave. You did not move a muscle as the blade came swooping down and through where his neck was. To our astonishment, Stan did not suffer even a tiny scratch. We are so proud of his bravery.

Our own Katie Barbaree shared a talent that she has kept hidden from us all of these months in our school. Katie was floating in the air. Yes, that's right, floating. As Katie was lying on a flat board, we watched as the stools holding the board and Katie were removed, the board still in the same position as when the stools were holding it up, and Katie was remaining so still. The magician then used a big ring and ran it completely across the board, with Katie remaining in the floating position. If you have any doubts about this, just ask Katie, as she was given a picture of the actual scene. Katie, we were so surprised and just cannot understand why you have not shared this ability with us before.

Rayanne Ross gave one of her shoes to the magician only to be told that Odor Eaters were still available in the stores. The mood was set, we did not know for what, but we knew something outstanding was headed our way. Therefore, we were braced for just about anything. To our shock, Rayanne's shoe was burned. That's right. The shoe was placed into a box and, with the help of the magician, the shoe was completely destroyed. Rayanne did not have a pleasant look on her face that time. Soon, however, she was sharing that pretty smile with us again, as her shoe suddenly appeared on the foot of Ed. Everyone lived happily ever after, as the story ends. It was a lot of fun and such great enjoyment. The magician shared the importance of staying drug free and encouraging the students to do the same throughout the program. Mrs. Franklin, our counselor, was respon-sible for the program and we express our thanks big time.

But that's not all folks, as we had one more program last week. The Arkansas Arts Center presented Mirror of Faith, an opera illustrating how drugs could destroy a person and the importance of staying away from any type of drugs.

We enjoyed both programs so very much, although the students gave the supreme sacrifice by missing two classes. This was difficult for them, and we do hope that they will realize that the sacrifice was noted as well as appreciated.

This school year is about to come to a close as the time draws nearer. We all realize that this is the last year for this old building to house a portion of education in Gurdon. This building was constructed n 1929, and, as needed, various additions were made throughout the years. It holds numerous memories by many people. For each of you who has a special memory of the former high school building, which is now the middle school, that you would like to share with us, please call our school and let us know about them so we can share with our readers. This would be very special information; instead of show and tell, just call and share, as we will be anxiously awaiting for the phone to ring.

The junior high Quiz Bowl, sponsored by Mrs. Downey, practiced several days for preparation of the competition conducted at Fordyce. Although our team did not win an award, we are very proud of each of you and want you to know that you are winners to each of us at GMS.

Boxes, boxes and more boxes are being supplied for the teachers to start their packing for the big move. You would probably be surprised to see what has to be done, but you will hear no complaints.

Another week is almost gone and only a couple of weeks left for this year; you can be sure that we will remain busy and making those Classy Moments at GMS.
