System Has Generator Woes

A problem was reported concerning the generator at the Red Springs booster station because the generator isn't big enough to carry the load required.

This information was imparted from Harold Hurst, manager of the Gurdon Water and Sewer Department, to members of the Gurdon Water and Sewer Commission recently.

Hurst said the emergency generators for Red Springs and Sycamore booster stations, for the Rural Water Project, were sized the same, but the Red Springs station has a larger motor and needs a bigger generator.

Making the change in size will cost the department another $4,000. These funds will be paid from the loan proceeds for the project, he said.

Clean up work is left to be done on the project. Dirt work needs to be done, while there are fences to be repaired as well, he said. In addition, there is some minor warranty work to be completed before the project can be officially closed.

But, there is also a problem of stale water for the customers already hooked onto the system.

In order to alleviate the situation, he said, the lines are being flushed regularly. The problem, he continued, will correct itself as more people connect onto the system.

At this time, about 50 percent of those customers who signed up for city water have hooked on. Hurst said the others who signed up but haven't hooked their houses up yet are still required to pay a minimum bill according to the terms of the lending agency.

Hurst said the City of Gurdon has an ordinance requiring sealed bids for any purchase over $5,000. Ads were placed in the newspaper requesting sealed bids for the purchase of a used two-ton dump truck.

Three bids were received. Michael Garrett turned in a bid of $17,075 for a 1990 International Model 4700 4X2. This vehicle doesn't have metal sides or a tailgate. With these items, the bid was $18,030.13.

Inmon Truck Sales Inc, submitted a bid for $25,795 for a 1993 International 4700 cab and chassis.

Ramsey Truck and Equipment's bid was $15,950 for a 1988 International S-1954 model.

All bids were rejected.

Hurst was given permission by the commission to spend up to $20,000 for a used dump truck.
