Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, September 1, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesWe're back! Can you believe that school has started? Goodness, it seems as though it was just last week that we got out for the summer. Time has a way of passing quickly. We started the year out with the news that Marianne Roe had taken a teaching position in Magnet Cove. We are happy for her, as she now lives in Malvern and she won't have that drive each day to Gurdon, but she will be greatly missed. Our best wishes to her for a real good year. Several have commented about how smoothly this school year has started fewer problems than we can remember. However, for several years, we thought we would be moving from the middle school on Fifth Street and did not move when expected. The lockers had been moved to make ready for the new high school, and middle school students had to use cardboard boxes to store book, paper, etc. Teachers were packed up ready to move, only to be informed, not just yet. Delays, beyond control, caused the move to take longer than expected. Finally the big day to move to the "old high school" on Third Street. Although the building was not the best, it was by far better for us. The students did not have to leave campus for band and shop. Big news came and when we found out that a new middle school was going to be built, we were almost jumping up and down! As you know, we moved into this beautiful new building last school year and time went by so fast for us. We had adjustments and decisions to make concerning what was best for the students. Maybe the reason we have started out so smoothly is because 'we are at home' this year with no worry about having to move. We are very thankful for our school. We thank the Cabe Foundation, the school board, Mr. Smithson, and you for your support. Mrs. Downey and Mrs. Hitt are enjoying their new classrooms, and we are so happy for them. Their rooms are in the same building as the CMS Gym. The new football field in front of our building look wonderful! We enjoyed watching that "field" take shape. Also, the new field house, concession stand, and ticket booths all make the Gurdon School second to none! We have several first year students with us, and have lost some of our students to other schools. We always welcome new ones, but we are not happy to have to give up the ones who we feel belong to us. We are excited to be back, and look forward to the continuation of making those Classy Moments at CMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
