Red Springs EHCPublished Wednesday, May 20, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesWhat's new in Media Technology was the program presented to the Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club by Jean Toland on May 14 in the home of Katherine Burchfield. One question asked was to describe ways people communicated with one another when they were children. Remember when the family gathered in the living room every Saturday night to listen to the Grand Ole Opry on a battery powered radio? Or your first television the old timers called a one eyed devil? The party line hand cranked telephone everyone on your line eaves- dropped on your con-versations to hear the latest news? Well we've come a long way, Baby! Always remember a cellular phone is a radio. It is a two-way walkie-talkie that acts like a telephone, where you can talk and listen at the same time, do fancy things like 3-way calls, conference calls, call hold and voice mail. The pagers are small enough to clip on your belt, pocket or put in your purse, and comes in five types tone only, tone and voice, numeric, alphanumeric, and two-way. The Internet for home, business and government was discussed with additional information available at the county Extension office. In the business session, Katherine gave the devotional 'Trouble Tree' which she received from the Internet. Twelve members answered the roll call with the media they use most. Betty Cook gave a report on the county cancer turban workshop she conducted in Arkadelphia. Seventy five turbans, sleep and bonnet caps have been sewn by the Red Springs Club. These are given to cancer patients in need of them. Contact Elizabeth Wilson at 353-2538 if you know of someone who needs one. A donation was given to Tootsie Dempsey on the refreshments served during the disaster and CPR classes. Elizabeth Ezell, a 4-H member, has been invited to speak at the June meeting on her 4-H activities. Katherine Birchfield won the door prize. Jean Toland adjourned the meeting with the reading, Forget and Remember. Lunch was served at noon with blessing of the food by Georgia Schee. Dorothy Nilz will host the June 18 meeting.
