CLASSY MOMENTS

Published Wednesday, May 20, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

First things first, as the saying goes. I do need to apologize to our fifth graders for not sharing their exciting trip to the Diamond Mine in Murfreesboro with you. Several parents took time out to go with the students and they are so greatly appreciated. The students had a great time, as it was the first "visit" for many to look for diamonds. Needless to say, no diamonds were found on the trip, but who knows what may be waiting for them the next time. As they were finalizing the readiness to depart, the sky was cloudy with the looks of possible rain, but, dedicated as they were, like the mail service, they went through with their plans.

Brown bag lunches were prepared in the cafeteria, ice chests made ready to keep their drinks cold, buses arrived at the back of the building, and quickly and quietly the students took their assigned seats and off they went with happy faces and great expectations. The teachers, Mrs. Butler, Mrs. Green, and Mrs. Davies could become travel agents, as they planned this excursion like professionals, as they are.

The band entertained us with wonderful music during a concert Thursday. Wow! Although we knew they were good, it was just amazing of how much better they have become. The band may be small in number, but they are many in much, much talent. Thanks for a great performance, band.

Sadness and happiness always seem to go together when grad-uation at GHS takes place. Friday evening the setting was perfect. Gus Brown Field looked as though it had been ready for royalty to appear, the stands and beyond were packed with friends and family members to watch as the high school faculty led the graduation students in their caps and gowns of purple across the field to their respected positions.

Parents of the graduates had front row seats, as they were seated on the field, thus providing them the opportunity to be able to see their child receive the award that had been 13 years in the making their diploma from Gurdon High. Tears of happiness and sadness were flowing from many as it was realized that a "new beginning" in the lives of the graduation class of 1998 was now a reality. Our sincere congratulations to each of you as you have accomplished so much and now as you go forth to pursue your dreams.

GMS was hurting Friday! It is always a very upsetting day when we find out that our school has had univited guests during the night. The damage found in the building was bad. We can hope that this will not happen again.

The GMS Student Council assembly will be Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. The new officers will be installed. The present officers amended the Student Council Constitution to read "Cabe Middle School Students Council" instead of Gurdon Middle School Student Council. Also Wednesday, Mrs. Hitt will have the choir concert at 1:00 p.m. in the auditorium. We always enjoy the talent Mrs. Hitt's students provide.

This week is a busy one for us as we are making the final preparations to bring this school year to a close. The last year for this 'dear old building' to hear the all of the sounds of school days. This pictures of the graduates of the past hang in the halls, are a reminder that hundreds have been here before. Memories are a valuable procession, treasure them.

Hope you have made plans to attend our awards assembly next week and thanks again for helping us in so many different ways to make those Classy Moments at GMS.
