A new roof will be placed on the courtroom portion of the Nevada County Courthouse if the contractor can begin the job before July.

Wright Bros. Inc. from Texarkana will be installing the new roof and it will be a rubber roof manufactured locally by Firestone.

The roof bid was accepted during the regular meeting of the Nevada County Quorum Court on Monday, May 11.

JPs agreed to Wright Bros. though it was not the lowest bidder. A 15-year warranty will be purchased by the county for an additional $533.

The tar and gravel roof on the courtroom is the original roof, installed in 1964.

A few years ago JPs had a foam roof blown onto the lower portion of the courthouse. This covered the hallways and offices.

JPs approved a resolution for the preservation of the Oak Grove gym in Oak Grove near Rosston.

Joe Hale and Herbert Coleman visited with JPs about the restoration of the gym which is on the National Register of Historic Buildings.

JPs agreed to help fund the 50/50 matching grant money by entering into an interlocal agreement for $1,000 and offering in-kind labor for the project.

Officials with the project hope the funds to match the grant can be raised from private individuals and donations.

JPs approved a $4,000 salary for part-time secretary work for the county's DARE officer, Thomas Goad.

Goad told JPs he would like to hire Nevada County Sheriff's Office secretary Judy Gregory to work on the books for the DARE program when she is not working on her duties for the sheriff's office.

$2,000 of the salary is already in place for the program. Goad said the remainder would come from somewhere else besides county general funds.

JPs mentioned the telephone budget for the sheriff's office was nearly gone for the year with the paying of April's bills.

JPs said the April bill turned in is for $958 for telephones while the budget is $7,100 for 1998.

More than $3,000 of 1998's budget is already spent.

Officials said they would notify the sheriff of the potential problem.
