Nevada's Beth Neel Attends HOBY SeminarPublished Wednesday, May 27, 1998 in the Nevada County PicayuneBeth Neel, representing Nevada High School, recently attended the Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership annual leadership semi-nar at the C.A. Vines 4-H Center in Ferndale. HOBY is an international organization which hosts leadership seminars for high school sophomores in major cities across the United States. Every high school in America is given the opportunity to nominate an outstanding student to attend their state's weekend-long expense-paid seminar. The selection process is based upon the leadership they have shown in their schools and communities. The 1998 ambassadors of the Arkansas leadership seminar south participated in a pilot program on volunteerism and service at the Arkansas Children's Hospital and the Arkansas Food Bank. The service project encouraged the roughly 175 high school sophomores to return to their communities, take up leadership positions and to engage in at least 100 hours of community service within a year's time. This project represents HOBY's promise and commitment to the President's Summit for America's Future. The students also interacted in group discussions with recognized leaders in the media, government, business and health care, as they participated on panel sessions to help the students better understand the HOBY seminar theme, 'America's Incentive System.'
