Nevada High Holds Academics Awards CeremonyPublished Wednesday, May 27, 1998 in the Nevada County PicayuneNevada High School had its academic award ceremony May 8. Awards for various areas were given to the following people. Academic and technical schol-arships were awarded to: Chad Bingham, LaDonna Burns, Leslie Clements, Casey Curtis, Amber Glass, Keri Gibson, Amanda Higgins, Keith Hyatt, Jeremy Kretz to the U of A Community College at Hope; Shanika Allen to SAU Tech; Tamika Leaks to Southern Arkansas University; Tamla Allen to Arkansas State University; Amber Miller to Henderson State Uni-versity. The Rusty Cummings Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Amber Miller for $500 and to Amanda Higgins for $500. The Verna Rena Williams Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Joey Nowlin, $200, Tamika Leaks, $200 and Courtney Mixon, $200. The Nevada School Scholarship Committee awarded approximately $8,000 to 25 seniors. (See separate article.) Voice of Democracy Speech/Script Writing Contest (VFW): Lori O'Keefe, first place, $100; Lesley Waltall, second place, $75; and LaTina Henry, $50. The Teacher of the Year Award went to Mrs. Tracy Light, junior high math teacher. This award, presented by the journalism class, is voted on by students in grades 7 through 12.
