Salb Wins National Championship

Amanda Salb, a junior at Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., won a national championship in track and field Friday night.

She won the national title in NCAA Division III in the national championships held at MacAlester College in St. Paul, Minn., in the shot put with a distance of 44 feet 11 inches.

Not only is the distance her best personal record, but it's the best ever at Mt. Holyoke and the best this year in Division III for women.

Salb was named an All-American in during the track and field events. She is the third All- American ever from Mt. Holyoke.

Salb graduated from Nevada High School in 1995. At the school she participated in basketball, where she played post, and in track, where she excelled in the shot put.

On May 10, 1995, at Lake Ham-ilton High School in the Arkansas Meet of Champions, she won the shot put event with a new personal record of 38 feet 7+ inches.

Her parents are Karl and Jessie Salb of Buckner (they live near Falcon).

Both Parents participated in track and field at Kansas. Karl Salb, originally from Crossett, set several records in the shot put and discus while at Kansas and had six national championships. Mrs. Salb also participated in the shot put.

Amanda Salb is majoring in pre-medicine at Mt. Holyoke, the nation's oldest institution of higher education for women.
