Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, May 27, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesAs you are reading this, we are making final preparations to come to the end of another school year. Ending a school year is not some-thing new, but this particular one is very different for GMS. As you know, this is the final year for Gurdon Middle School. Excitement is so evident in our building, one can almost feel the vibrations by just passing by the school. Teachers are busy packing as they prepare to make the big move to the new building with a new name, Cabe Middle School. They are trying to keep the students from taking the discarded items home with them. Parents, please understand that if you find some bulky packages of various shapes, sizes and colors, don't panic as your child just took from the discarded stack and found what he believes to be a treasure to take home. Recalling memories of years past, do you remember finding items that became treasures to you, but were considered trash to the one who threw it away? My, oh, my, how those treasures seemed to increase during the years, and oftentimes, they were most difficult to part with. Kids, young and old, seem to get en-joyment out of collecting things. We even have a sixth grade teacher who collects these strange little items called Beanie Babies. But, Julia, if that makes you happy, collect to your little heart's content since we share in your excitement when you add to your collection. Please understand that what your child might have selected as a treasure is just that to him. Maybe before too long, he will decide to get rid of the excess accumulation of things, only to make room for more. Perhaps he could add to your next yard sale. We were entertained with the junior high choir performance lately. The choir is under the direc-tion of Mrs. Hitt. My, what talent! All choir members were wonderful and together, they really put on a wonderful performance. Shocked? Surprised? You better believe it! We realized an unknown talent had been with us in the classrooms, hallways, cafeteria and in other areas of the building all school year, but we never suspected anything this out-standing. It was marvelous! This particular student speaks with such a soft low voice, we were just extremely surprised when the seventh grader, Jenise Jackson, walked to center stage, took the microphone from the stand, took a step back and then held us spell-bound while she sang to an audience that applauded, stood up and cheered as new talent was once again discovered by Mrs. Hitt and shared with us. Jenise, thank for the entertainment. The junior high choir is full of talent. April Morgan, also a seventh grader, somewhere, some place in time, there has to be a silver lining waiting for you. If you continue to study under the direction of Mrs. Hitt, you may have a future in the music world. It is amazing how much talent we have at GMS. The entire choir was wonderful. We enjoyed the concert and look forward to what next year will bring. The senior high choir also came for a special performance. Kelly Purifoy and Kara Thomas had already received their diplomas, but they came back to sing for us. They were wonderful! To each choir member, we say thanks for taking time to come to share with us your singing talent. To bring a beautiful performance to a close, a very special entertainer walked upon the stage, and from that then until the song 'One Mo-ment in Time' was finished, Mrs. Hitt held us in the palm of her hand, as the saying goes. What a voice! We are so fortunate to have her as a music teacher for our students. Thank you for making a "moment in time" in our lives very special. The installation of new Student Council officers and representatives was conducted Monday of last week. The outgoing officers presented Mrs. Clingan, their sponsor, with a beautiful gift. She will be sharing it for years, as it will have a special place on her desk. The student body was informed of an amendment to the Student Council Constitution. It now reads Cabe Middle School Student Council and CMSSC. Lyndi Escalante, outgoing president, also announced that the council had purchased two flag poles for the new building. One is for the national flag; the other is for the state flag. Such an accomplishment, as the Student Council is not a fund-raiser, but made an exception this year as they had established a goal for them-selves. The 'citizen' students Jessica Land, fifth grade; Heather Austin, sixth grade; Heath Griffin, seventh grade; and Breana Buford, eighth grade were treated to a pizza luncheon with Mr. Alexander. We are missing a picture from the hallway. If you know who borrowed the senior class picture of 1956, please get in touch with them and ask them to return it to us as soon as possible. It was probably used for a reunion of the classmates and then forgotten to be returned. Thursday morning at 9:00, the awards assembly will be presented. This is always very special as special honor is given to various students. You are invited to attend. If the students bring a stamp self-addressed envelope by Thursday, their grades will be mailed to them and attendance on Friday will not be necessary. Classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and tomorrow (Thurs-day) will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m. School will come to a close Friday when grades are handed out. It is always so nice to hear about 'fans' of the articles. I appreciate your compliments so very much. Jackie, my prayers are with you and that grandchild. To the Cathey family, thanks again for your support. Mrs. Middleton, we still think of you often, and we have the Welcome Mat out for you. Until next week, never fear, as the end draw near we will be busy making those classy moments at GMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
