Candidates Are Glad Race Is OverBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, June 3, 1998 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's two mayoral candidates are both relieved the primaries are over. Both candidates visited with as many voters as they could, seeking support for their bids for office. The final outcome was a victory for incumbent Mayor Rick Smith. Danny Paull said he's pleased with the outcome and enjoyed campaigning. "I had so much fun running," he said, "I may run for office again." He congratulated Smith on the win, saying he was glad it was a clean campaign. Paull also said he will now turn his attentions to the Gurdon Fire Department. Smith voiced appreciation for the voters who turned out and cast their ballots. Now, he said, he's ready to return to work, as there is a lot the city will be facing in the next four years. A census will be done in the year 2000, he said, and it's critical for Gurdon to get a good count. The city receives about $62 per year per person in federal turnback funds, with the amount being based on the census figures. However, he pointed out, the census is only done once every 10 years.
