College NewsPublished Wednesday, June 10, 1998 in the Nevada County PicayuneSusan Brannan of Prescott has been named to the dean's list at Ouachita Baptist University for the 1998 spring semester. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Brannan Jr. of Prescott. Students making at least a 3.5 grade point average and up to a 4.00 average for the semester are placed on the dean's list, according to Dr. Mike Arrington, vice presi-dent for academic affairs. The Gamma Beta Phi Society, a national honors society and service organization, in a ceremony at the University of Central Arkansas on April 19, inducted 232 new mem-bers. Russell K. Shope of Prescott was one of the 232 new members inducted in the ceremony. He is the son of Sandra Shope of Prescott. To be selected for membership in the organization, a student must be in the top 20 percent of his or her class, with at least a 3.5 GPA and be committed to excellence in edu-cation, to good character and to service. Three students from Nevada County were among the 1,800 undergraduate students who received degrees from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in May. Vava C. Hooper of Prescott from the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences graduated with a bachelor's degree in zoology. Amy M. Young of Prescott from the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biochemistry. Danielle E. Hebert of Rosston from the College of Education and Health Professions graduated with a bachelor's degree in Communications disorders. Shannon M. Crayne graduated cum laude from the University of South Carolina on Wednesday, May 6. She earned a bachelor of arts in early childhood education and will be certified to teach kindergarten through eighth grade. She proved to be an outstanding member of Gamma Beta Phi honor society during her college career. Shannon also worked in the local schools as a volunteer, reading tutor, observer, practice teacher and student teacher. Mrs. Crayne is currently teaching third grade at Beaufort Elementary School during the summer program. She is the wife of Sergeant Robert Crayne of Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Joe Glass of Hope and Shirley Cornelius of Prescott. On Friday, May 15, Southern Arkansas University of Magnolia, conferred degrees to 338 students. Of those graduates, 41 graduated with honors. Students attaining a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5-3.74 will graduate cum laude, students who earn a GPA of 3.75-3.89 will graduate magna cum laude, and students who earn a GPA of 3.9-4.00 will graduate summa cum laude, the highest honor bestowed. Ten students from Nevada County attending the University of Arkansas at Hope have been named to the chancellor's honor roll for the spring semester. Fourteen from the county made the dean's list the last semester. Those from the county making the chancellor's honor roll were Steve Inlow, Jennifer Greenwood, Stacy Callicot, Debbie Burke, Melissa Almand, Tammy L. Williams, Krista Niemeyer, Christl Morrow, Debra Shipp and Walter Smith. Students named to the dean's list were Brandi G. Jester, Nancy Hull, Clara Gulley, Barbara Evans, Amber Burke, Amber Young, Scott Virden, Cornelia Vansickle, Melissa Little, Nicole Simon, Kenneth Russell, Jheon Norel, Jacqueline Norvell and Steven Sheets. Following the spring semester at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, 336 students were named to the SAU dean's list. To be eligible for the dean's list a student must be registered in 12 or more semester hours and attain a grade point average of 3.50 or above. Students from Nevada County making the list included Brent Waters of Willisville; Deanna Ellis, Russell Glass, Katie Gordon, Shaun McKamie, Jeffrey Milam, Stacy Milam, Tiffany Rash and Jim Stockton of Prescott; Kimberly Mason and Allison Young of Rosston; and Shelly Browning, Sarah Huett and Thomas Peck of Emmet.
