A new assistant coach has been hired for Gurdon High School.

In a special called meeting, Thursday, May 4, the board interviewed two finalists for the assistant coaching position Mark Shelton and Steve Barber.

Shelton was awarded the job to help with the Go-Devil football team and Lady Devil basketball team. In addition, he will teach social studies at GHS.

According to Superintendent Bobby Smithson, Shelton spent three years at Hope High School as an assistant coach, and has been a head coach at Hazen and Hartford.

Barber, the other finalist, was from Texarkana.

A total of 15 coaches applied for the slot, which came open when it was learned Coach Randy Kizer will not be able to return to the duties of assistant coach after his medical problems.

The only other item on the agenda for the called meeting was to discuss bids for the physical education facility at Gurdon Primary School. All bids were rejected as they were too high.

Smithson said the district will try and get its own subcontractor to do the job, while acting as the general contractor.

Because of scheduling conflicts, the regular June meeting of the Gurdon School Board has been moved from June 16 to the 23rd.
