Five Students Return From Girls StatePublished Wednesday, June 17, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesBethany Cooper, Rachelle Reece, Amy Ross and Valerie Swayze of Gurdon and Mandy Shaver of Beirne have returned after attending Girls State in Searcy at Harding University May 31-June 5 Students attending Girls State learn about government and they run for political office to fictitious districts, counties and cities. On the last day, students visited the State Capitol to go through the motions of running the state. Shaver was elected alderman to Ward Five to the city of Overton in the county of Fulbright.
