No one has to be told how hot it is, and, likewise, no one expected it to be this hot this soon.

Because of the sudden drastic rise in the temperature, a number of elderly and infirm residents in the Gurdon area have no way to cool themselves off.

The Gurdon Rotary Club, in connection with the Salvation Army and Gurdon Times, are working with the Gurdon Senior Adult Center to raise money to purchase fans for these people.

A supplier has been found with 170 pedestal oscillating fans which can be purchased for $15 each.

Donations to the cause can be made to the Rotary Club, and these are tax deductible.

In addition, used fans in good condition can be brought to the Gurdon Times office where they will be stored until they are passed out to those in need.

Or, those with fans to donate can call Mary Smith at the Gurdon Sonic at 353-2573. She said they will be glad to come by people's home and pick them up.

However, those seeking one of these fans do have to qualify, with the regulations based on the food assistant program guidelines, based on family size and income.

A one-person household will qualify if the weekly pay is $198, or they bring in $855 a month. The annual limit is $10,257.

For two in a home, the figures rise to $1,150 per month, $266 a week and $13,793 per annum.

A three-person household has the limits of $334 per week, $1,445 per month or $17,329 a year.

Homes with four residents have the limit of $402 per week, $1,739 a month or $20,865 annually.

Five people in a family can qualify with an income of $470 a week, $2,034 per month or $24,401 a year.

Six-person homes have limits of $538 a week, $2,329 a month or $27,937 annually.

Homes with seven in the family can have weekly incomes of $606, or make $2,623 a month. The yearly salary can be 431,473.

The limit for those homes with eight-member families is $674 a week, $2,918 a month and $35,009 a year.

For larger families, the figures rise $68 more per member on a weekly basis, $295 per person per month, or $3,536 per year for each member.

Those seeking fans will have to show proof of income before getting assistance. Those coming for fans should bring a copy of their 1998 federal income tax report with them.

The fans will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis, regardless of age, race or sex.

The fans will be given away Wednesday, July 1 at the Senior Adult Center from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., and again from 5-7 p.m.

For more information, call Tambra Smith or Wendy Maxwell at 353-2514, or John Miller at 353-4368.
