Culpepper Victorious In Run-Off ElectionBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, June 17, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune Close does count. In the runoff election for 8th Judicial District Judge Division 1, Prescott's Duncan Culpepper eked out a victory by a scant 215 votes over his opponent Keith Wood. Each candidate won big in their home county, but Culpepper's win in Nevada County is what pushed him over the top and into the newly created judgeship. Overall, Culpepper received 2,692 votes, with Wood getting 2,477. In Nevada County, Culpepper got 1,731 votes, with Wood receiving 530. The roles were pretty much reversed in Hempstead County as Wood ended up with 1,947 ballots to 961 for Culpepper. In a box by box breakdown in Nevada County, Culpepper took the early voting 284-37, and carried the absentee box 170-29. He won all but two boxes in the county, those being Alabama, which preferred Wood 23- 16, and Cale, at 15-14. Culpepper took ward 3 54-12, won ward 2 84-25; carried Boughton 56-9; captured Georgia 31-9; earned ward 1 274-61; snared Rosston 60-28; and posted a victory in Willisville 57-22. In the Jackson/Leake area, Culpepper won 20-16; brought in a 79-34 margin in West Rural; saw a better result in East Rural at 114-22; slipped by in Union 36-23; walked off with ward 4 86-22; and took a slim win in Laneburg/Sutton 49-37. Culpepper posted a 79-42 win in Emmet; took Bluff City 24-13; slipped by at Bodcaw 51- 41; and enjoyed a big win in Liberty/New Hope at 93-10. The roles were reversed in Hempstead County, where Wood calls home, as he captured all but one box. Wood whipped Culpepper 92-20 in box 1A; posted a 128-59 win in box 2A; took a 75-30 victory in box 1B; earned box 1C 44-19; took 1D 99-74; and 4A 29-6. Box 6 went to Wood by a margin of 75-41; he took ward 3 49-23; earned Shover Springs 50-11; snared McNab 9-3; captured Gurnsey 31-15; posted a 45-9 win in Washington; won big in Fulton 68-14; took Patmos 33-18; snared Perrytown 53-24; had a big win in Ozan at 24-4, with a 25-4 margin in the Sardis II box; and won in Blevins 127-59. Rocky Mound went for Wood 43-14; while he won in McCaskill 58-24; Spring Hill favored him 147-65; with Saratoga preferring Culpepper 20-18. It was close in Cross Roads, but Wood edged Culpepper 22-16, while blowing him out in box 4B 29-3. Deann went for Wood 48-27; with Columbus preferring him by a larger margin at 25-7 In Bingen, it was 37-31 for Wood, while Box 7 had a 115-76 vote. Early voting saw Wood win 192-145, and capture Absentee voting 157-100. In the race for U.S. Senate, Winston Bryant won Hempstead County 1,466 to 1,421 over Blanche Lambert Lincoln.
