Fan Program Deadline Nearing

Area residents in need of some way to move the summer's blistering air around are in luck.

The Gurdon Rotary Club, working with the Gurdon Times, will provide free fans to those who qualify. These fans will be given away at the Gurdon Senior Adult Center from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 1. In addition, they will be given away from 5-7 p.m. that day as well.

The club and Times worked together to raise the money to purchase 160 fans, but more funds and fans are still needed to help those in need.

Fans can be donated at the Gurdon Times office, but must be in good working condition. Or, someone wanting to donate a fan can call Mary Smith at the Gurdon Sonic Drive In. Smith said she will have the fans picked up.

Johnny McGuirt, with Ann's Smoke Shop, found 16-inch oscillating fans at a good price, selling them to the fan drive at his cost.

This effort is designed to help the elderly and infirm of the area survive the worsening heat. Though summer began Sunday, June 21, predictions for triple digit temperatures have already begun.

It is possible the summer of 1998 could be comparable to the summer of 1980.

Concerned residents can also donate money to the cause along with fans.

All donations can be taken as tax deductions from charitable donations next year.

Those getting the fans must provide proof of need financially. The need is based on the Emergency Food Assistance Program financial guidelines.

A family of one can make $198 per week, 855 a month or 10,257 annually.

Two family households can bring in $266 weekly, 1,150 per month or 13,793 each year.

Those homes with three people can make up to $334 a week, 1,445 per month or 17,329 a year.

Four person households can bring in $402 a week, 1,739 a month or 20,865 a year.

Those homes with at least five people living in them can make $470 a week, 2,034 per month or 24,401 annually.

For six person family homes, the weekly income level is $538, while the monthly mark is 2,329 and the yearly total can be as much as 27,937.

Seven person households can make up to $606 a week, 2,632 a month or 31,473 a year.

Families with at least eight family members can bring in $674 a week, 2,918 per month or 35,009 each year.

Each additional family member can garner an additional $68 per week, or 295 per month or 3,536 a year.

The fans will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Those coming to get a fan are asked to bring a copy of their latest income tax return.

For more information on the program, or to help, call John Miller at 353-4368, Tambra Smith or Wendy Maxwell at 353-2514, or Mary Smith at the Sonic at 353-2573.
