Little League's VFW Team Wins Season, Tournament

Western Auto posted an 11-6 win over All-Care in the opening round of the Prescott Little League baseball tourney.

All Care opened strong in the top of the first as three runs scored. The Western Auto crew fought back in the bottom of the frame to score once.

In the second inning, All Care added a run to go up 4-1, but the Western Auto squad was running on all eight cylinders and tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

The All Care team, playing shorthanded, added one more in the top of the third, but saw Western Auto add six to its tally to take control of the game 10-5. Each team scored once in the fifth.

Turner went to the plate three times for All Care, getting three hits and scoring three times, while driving one in.

Love batted once and scored, while Wingfield had a hit in two at bats, and scored twice. Ray had two at bats and came away empty.

Christopher was one for two at the plate, while Russell was two for three with a trio of RBIs. Campbell was 0-2.

For Western Auto, Haynie batted once and scored twice, Trevillion scored as a pinch runner, with McKinnon going one for two, scoring twice and driving two in.

Strickland had three at-bats, getting a pair of hits and two RBIs, with Loe going 0-3 at the plate. Thompson batted and scored once, with Vanderveer going 0-1 and Delgado scoring as a pinch runner. Mills scored twice while Hale scored two runs and batted once.

KIWANIS 13

ROTARY 3

Game two saw the Kiwanis team club Rotary 13-3.

Rotary was able to score single runs in the first, third and fourth frames.

The Kiwanis crew opened strong with four in the bottom of the first, added three more in the second and six in the third.

For Rotary, Bullock was one for three, scoring once; Billings was one for two with a run scored; Roberson was one for two; while Turner was 0-2 at the plate; Brown went one for two, scoring once and driving one in; Pennington was 0-1; Ingram was one for two; Dendy was 0-1 and Hamilton didn't bat.

For the Kiwanis team, Muldrow was two for three, scoring three times; Fitch was one for two, scoring twice and driving one in; Hopper was 0-1, but scored twice; Vanhook went two for three, crossing home twice and bringing two in with RBIs; J. Bryan went one for three, with a trio of RBIs; while A. Bryan scored once; T. Coulter was 0-1; with Parks 0-1, but scoring once; D. Coulter went 0-2 at the plate, while Jackson was one for one with two runs scored.

BLUFF CITY 10

Bluff City clipped Western Auto's wings 10-9 in game three.

The Western Auto team opened with four in the first, added three in the second and two in the top of the fourth.

Bluff City responded with two in the first, four in the second, one in the third and three in the bottom of the fourth for the victory.

Haynie was 0-2 with a run scored for Western Auto; Trevillion was 0-1 with two runs scored; McKinnon went 0-3; Strickland was 0-2 but scored once; R. Young went 0-1 and scored three times with two RBIs; Thompson scored twice; Vanderveer was 0-1; and Hale was 0-1.

Bluff City saw Box go 0-2 but score twice; Monk was one for three, scoring twice and driving two in; Jones was 0-2; Mixon went two for three, scoring twice and adding two RBIs to his total; Nathan went 0-3; with J. Gulley one for two with a run scored; B. Gulley was two for two, scoring once and driving two in; Haddix went 0-1, but scored once; Marlar was 0-1; with Martin scoring once.

KIWANIS 5

LIONS 3

Game four was more of a defensive struggle as the Kiwanis team edged the Lions 5-3.

The Kiwanis team scored once in the first, again in the second, added two in the third and one in the fifth.

The Lions scored a run in the first and two in the fourth.

The Kiwanis team scored five times on one hit, while the Lions scored three times on six hits.

Muldrow went 0-2 but scored once; J. Bryan was 0-3 at the plate; Hopper was 0-1 with a run scored; Vanhook was one for one, scoring twice and driving one in; Fitch went 0-2; Jackson was 0-2 but scored; D. Coulter was 0-1, as was Parks; with J. Parrish also 0-1.

T. Barlow was on fire for the Lions as he connected on three of four at-bats, scoring once; M. Hodges went 0-2; J. Hodges went 0-3; Martin was one for two and had an RBI; Daniel went 0-2, as did Ratcliff; J. Barlow was 0-2 and scored once; Cox went one for three with an RBI; while Glass was one for one with a run scored.

VFW 7

BLUFF SPRINGS 6

The fifth game of the tourney saw the VFW set Bluff Springs down 7-6.

The Bluff Springs team sent 24 to the plate, getting six runs on two hits. The VFW squad had 19 at bats, scoring seven times on two hits.

Bluff Springs opened with two in the first, adding a pair in the second and fourth.

The VFW scored twice in the first, once in the third, three times in the fourth and once in the bottom of the sixth for the win.

Marlar went 0-3 for Bluff Springs; D. Box scored once; Monk went one for three; Mixon was one for four with a run scored; Jones went 0-4; J. Gulley was 0-3; with J. Haddix 0-2 with two runs scored; B. Gulley was 0-3, scored once and had an RBI; and Martin was 0-1 but scored once.

For the VFW, Niemeyer went one for three with a run scored; P. Hull was one for four with a run scored and an RBI; Beaver went 0-3; Butler scored once; Tosch was 0-3 with a run scored and an RBI; Cleveland went 0-2 but scored twice; R. Baker went 0-3; and C. Moseley went 0-1 with a run scored.

KIWANIS 3

The final game of the tourney saw the VFW post a 5-3 win over the Kiwanis team.

The Kiwanians sent 23 to the plate, scoring three runs on three hits.

The VFW crew, had 20 at-bats, scoring five runs on two hits. The VFW team finished the season with an overall record of 15-1, was the regular season champion and the tourney champs as well.

The Kiwanis team scored once in the top of the first and twice in the second.

The VFW club scored once each in the second and third, with three circling the bases in the fifth.

For the Kiwanis team, R. Muldrow was one for three with a run scored and RBI; Fitch went two for three with a run scored; Hopper was 0-2 with an RBI and run scored; Vanhook went 0-2; Jackson was 0-3; J. Bryan went 0-2; T. Coulter was 0-1, as was D. Coulter; Parks went 0-2; P. Overton was 0-1; and Parrish went 0-3 at the plate.

For the VFW, Sayers was blanked in three trips to the plate; Niemeyer was 0-2 with a run scored; Hull was one for three, scoring twice and driving one in; Beaver went one for two, scoring once and getting an RBI; Butler was 0-2 but scored once and had an RBI; Tosch went 0- 3; and Moseley was 0-2.
