3 On 3 Tourney Is Biggest DrawBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, July 8, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune One of the most popular events at the annual Prescott-Nevada County Chicken and Egg Festival is the Coop-Hoop Tournament. This three-on-three basketball tourney draws teams from throughout Southwest Arkansas. There will be no women's division this year, but the men's and boys brackets should more than make up for it. Registration for the boys division will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 17. Play will begin at 5. Teams will be divided into three categories, 12 and under, 13-14 and 15-17. The entry fee is $30 per team. Winning teams will receive a coop-hoop t-shirt and trophies. Registration for the men's division will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, July 18, with play beginning at 8 o'clock. Entry fees for the men's classification will be $60 per team. The format will be double elimination with one substitute. For the men, a cash prize of $250 will go to the winning team, while the first runner up will receive $100. In addition, the winning teams will get coop-hoop t-shirts and trophies. While registration will take place the day of the tourney, teams must enter no later than Wednesday, July 15. For more information, or to get an entry form, call the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce at (870) 887-2101. Those planning to enter can also write to the Chamber at P.O. Box 307, Prescott, AR 71857. Under the rules, games will be 16 points with each basket being worth one point within what is normally the three-point line. Beyond the arc shots made will be worth two points. A coin flip will determine which team gets the ball first and jump balls will then determine alternating possession. No baskets will be awarded on an offensive foul and all balls must be taken out at the top of the key. Teams must keep the same four members throughout the tournament. Fighting or abusive language will not be tolerated and is grounds for disqualification. Players need to be aware dunking will not be allowed either during warm ups or in games. In addition, players will call their own fouls, and after seven team fouls the opposing team will shoot free throws. There will be two one-minute time outs per game. Court monitors will be on each court to oversee disputes and may call fouls at any time during a game. Each court will also have an official scorekeeper, and any scoring dispute will be settled by the coop-hoop director. According to Mary Godwin, Chamber manager, this year's festival will also have a train ride, pony rides, the moon walk and a pitching booth where future all star hurlers can check their pitch speed by radar.
