Lyndi Escalante Completes Project Land Through AEGIS

Published Wednesday, July 8, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

Lyndi Escalante of Gurdon participated this summer in Project LAND along with 23 other students across Arkansas.

The program started June 7 at Village State Park and ended on June 27 at Russellville.

Project LAND (Learn Arkansas' Natural Divisions) traveled almost 3,000 miles within the borders of Arkansas visiting sites of scientific, economic and cultural significance. The program is an AEGIS (Academic Enrichment for Gifted in Summer) program and is funded through a grant from the Arkansas Department of Education.

The students spent three weeks camping in tents while visiting and seeing the state's caves, geologic deposits, collecting rocks, minerals, fossils, wild flowers, identifying trees, collecting leaves and viewing wildlife.

The students also floated the state's rivers and lakes and hiked its trails. Many of the state's national wildlife management areas were visited, as well as most of Arkansas' state parks.
