GHS Go-Devil Bash Held At The Arlington In Hot SpringsPublished Wednesday, July 8, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesOver the years many planned activities and fantastic parties have taken place at the Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs, but none were better organized, in such grand style and more fully enjoyed than the second annual Gurdon Go-Devil bash which was held there the weekend of June 26. Early arriving Go-Devils from the 50's and 60's found open arms, smiling faces and a warm welcome as they entered the Vensus Hospitality Suite. Joe Ann (Ross) Shaver (class of 1954) and husband, Charles (class of 52) were official greeters and name-tag applicators. A.B. Wood (class of 58) not only proved to be a world class beverage dispenser, but later he walked away as a champion with many prizes by identifying tunes played by the deejay. Pat (Ross) Brandt (class of 59) assured everyone's comfort and with the help of Laura Sue (Davis) Overton (class of 57), that a lavish food table was freshly stocked with new items that were timely added throughout the weekend. Should the flower business wilt, the group agreed that Billy Wells (class of 56) has the talent for full time party management. It was his idea for these annual bashes in the first place and the way he immersed himself in every activity with zeal and enthusiasm, would indicate that he enjoyed every minute. Taking advantage of the free time Friday evening, Ken Brown (class of 49) and his wife Jean (Jones) Brown (class of 51) and her sister, Bettie (Jones) Marsh (class of 58) gathered with Alma Jane (Otwell) Holbrook (class of 52) and her husband, Homer Holbrook, for dinner at Coy's. By Saturday night the number in attendance had outgrown the Magnolia Room so the hotel placed the party in a larger ballroom for the weekend's main event, the dinner and dance. The spacious dining room was arranged with round tables, each with fine linen, fresh flowers and bright colored foils and set for eight. This beautiful setting, along with the warm feelings that had developed from all the hugs that were given and received, the smiles that were exchanged over the past few hours, literally melted away the years since these Go-Devils were a team and replaced that time with a sense of belonging. Linda (Allen) McCree (class of 58) provided for the entertainment for the evening. Her husband, Dave, was the deejay and their granddaughter, Amberly Bakaklikos, and their friend, Lee Young, an Elvis impersonator, were vocalists with their own individual performances. If you are a Gurdon Go-Devil from the 50's and 60's and did not attend this event, you missed a sentimental journey back to that period and an opportunity to add some fun memories from this event. For another chance at the good life, perhaps you should join the ones who did attend by starting now to encourage Billy Wells to keep the tradition alive and assure that there is a Go- Devil bash 1999.
