Published Wednesday, July 15, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune SWADC Adds English As Second Language Southwest Arkansas Development (SWADC) Council Literacy Program has announced the addition of English as second language, tutoring the already long list of skills being offered by volunteers in its program. As the world changes and the demands on individuals, families and businesses increase, the definition of literacy also continues to shift. Learning to read and write better in English is a skill that challenges many adults in this nation. Literacy also includes problem-solving and higher level reasoning skills. It is estimated that 29% of the adults in Nevada County do not have the necessary skills to get and keep a living wage job. SWADC encourages adults who want to speak, read and write English better to call 887-5536 to ask for free lessons with a personal tutor.
