Those planning to seek a seat on area school boards should be getting their petitions signed and ready.

The deadline for turning petitions in for the September 15 School Election is Monday, Aug. 3, in Nevada County.

According to Nevada County Clerk Julie Stockton, all candidates must have the signatures of at least 25 registered voters from their districts. It is suggested to get more than 25 names, however.

In Prescott, zone 1, with Willie Marks, is the only seat open this time.

Emmet has zone 3, currently held by Steve Otwell, while in Nevada, the position up for election is zone 4, the Laneburg district, with Nelwyn Almand.

Prescott is the only district in the county to be asking for a millage increase, and this will only be to get the district up to the state's required minimum standard for maintenance and operation. This will amount to a 1 mill request.

Should the issue fail, it will then fall to the Nevada County Quorum will be required to institute the increase.
