Trey Burchfield has received a great honor by being selected as a 1998 4-H Teen Star and 4-H Ambassador.

Trey is the 16-year-old son of Robby and Kathryn Burchfield. He is an active member of the Terre-Noire 4-H Club in Clark County. He is a member of Baring Cross Missionary Baptist Church in Arkadelphia.

Trey was the 1998 Ross Foundation 4-H Photography State Contest second place winner in the black and white living category. An active 4-H member for the past seven years, he has been involved in many things, such as the Clark County Beef Ambassador, Most Outstanding Clark County 4-H member 1996 and 1997, Veterinary Science District Record Book winner five years, and the Fitness Leadership District Record Book winner one year.

He has shown dairy goats, beef cattle, turkeys and broilers at the county, state and regional levels. This year at the Southwest District O'Rama held at Henderson State University in June, Trey, John David Coston and Cameron Coston placed first in the non-classical instrumental talent division.

In 1995, Trey hosted a Labo exchange student from Japan. Daiji Otsuka spent four weeks with the Burchfield family. The cultural exchange was a wonderful experience.

The Terre Noire 4-H Club's main focus is the restoration of the Blackland Prairie near Okolona. The members spend a lot of time cutting encroaching cedars and other woody vegetation between isolated prairie openings. They also collect wild flower seeds for replanting degraded areas.

Trey is spending his first summer as a teen counselor for the 4-H junior camps. This will involve leading the young campers through each day's activities. He attended the Citizenship, Washington Focus 4-H in July. He will attend the 1998 High Adventure Program in August. This program takes place at Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M. This is Trey's second year to attend this event.

The National 4-H system established a display of peace and friendship from the youth of the United States to the young people of Russia. Trey participated in this display by donating a collage of photographs and a hand-woven oak basket. The display has become a permanent part of the Friendship Museum in Sochi, Russia, with items donated from 4-H members throughout the United States.

Some of the qualifications for being a 4-H Teen Star are integrity of character, high moral standards and goals, outstanding achievement in both project and service activities, ability to work with others, positive attitude, and interest in the 4-H program. After a 4-H'er is selected as a 4-H Teen Star, they then may apply to become an ambassador.

To become an ambassador, they must participate in an interview process and score at least 90 points out of 100 as judged by a panel of five judges. Trey gave a 500-word promotional speech as a part of the process. All of the 1998 4-H Ambassadors will be recognized at the Arkansas 4-H O'Rama in Fayetteville this summer.

If you are interested in joining a 4-H club should contact the local County Extension office at 246-2281.
