Historic Group To Take `Walk'

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program's (AHPP) 'Walks Through History' series will provide a free walking tour of the historic Hot Springs neighborhood between Quapaw and Prospect Avenues on Saturday, August 8.

The event is co-sponsored by the Garland County Historical Society and the Quapaw- Prospect Neighborhood Association, according to AHPP director Cathy Slater. The AHPP is an agency of the Department of Heritage.

The free tour will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Quapaw Community Center at 500 Quapaw Avenue.

It will feature reviews of architecturally significant homes dating from the early twentieth century through World War II, representing such styles as Classical Revival, Colonial Revival, English Revival and Craftsman.

Ken Story, the AHPP's preservation outreach coordinator, will lead the tour.

Other 'Walks Through History' tours will be held in the following sites:

  • September 12, Hope residential historic districts, Hempstead County;
  • October 10, downtown Heber Springs, Cleburne county;
  • November 7, Clifton and Greening Streets Historic District in Camden, Ouachita County; and
  • December 5, downtown El Dorado, Union County.
