OBU Sets Fall RegistrationPublished Wednesday, July 29, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesRegistration for the 1998 fall semester of classes at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia will be held Tuesday, August 25, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Evans Student Center and Lile Hall, according to Judy Jones, OBU registrar and director of admissions. Classes at Ouachita will begin on Wednesday, August 26. The last day to register for fall semester classes is Friday, August 28. Freshman and transfer students will begin arriving on campus on Saturday, August 22. A New Beginnings program for those students and their parents is scheduled for 3 p.m. that afternoon in Jones Performing Arts Center. The Baptist Student Union at Ouachita is hosting a "mixer' for the new students at 8 p.m. on Saturday in the Tiger Den. On Sunday, August 23, there will be a Bible study and worship service at 10 a.m. in Jones Performing Arts Center. At 2 p.m. that afternoon, Dr. Andrew Westmoreland, president of OBU, and his wife, Jeanna, will host a reception for the new students and their families and guests at the president's home at 904 North 26th Street in Arkadelphia. Tours of the city will also originate from the home during this period. A vespers service will be conducted at 8 p.m. on Sunday evening around Ouachita's International Flag Plaza, followed by an ice cream social at 8:30 p.m. in Grant Plaza. Local church congregations are invited to attend the social and become acquainted with the new arrivals on campus. Student group leaders, residence hall assistants and club, class and organization leaders will be arriving on the OBU campus for start-of-school workshops on Wednesday, August 19. Some of these students will be involved as leaders for small groups of freshman and transfers as they go through the orientation process beginning on Monday, August 24. Particular sessions during the orientation period will be focused on acquainting the new students with how to grow socially, spiritually, physically and academically. Ouachita's faculty and administrative staff will be preparing for the upcoming fall semester in participating in several events preceding registration. The annual faculty-staff banquet is set for Thursday, August 20, at 6 p.m. in the banquet room of Evans Student Center. On Friday, August 21, the OBU faculty/staff will gather at Speer Pavilion at 8 a.m. for a worship service to be followed by a continental breakfast in the Gallery of Mabee Fine Arts Center at 8:45 a.m. A planning workshop is set for the group from 9:30 a.m. to noon in McBeth Recital Hall in the Mabee Center. Many homes of the Ouachita faculty and staff will be opened the night of Monday, August 24, as they host a 7 p.m. dessert supper for the new students and orientation leaders. On Tuesday, August 25, Ouachita's fifth annual Spotlight on Arkadelphia will be held in front of Evans Student Center beginning at 8 p.m. Spotlight on Arkadelphia is designed to acquaint Ouachita's students with the goods, services and programs offered by Arkadelphia area merchants, churches and organizations. Dr. Jeff Root, assistant to the president for public relations and assistant professor of communications at OBU, said the university provides tables, chairs and electricity for the exhibitors and then allows a creativity of expression in what the exhibitors do with their space. Each year, approximately 55 to 60 exhibitors reserve space during Spotlight on Arkadelphia. There is no charge for the exhibitors or students.
