Top Students From Camp NamedPublished Wednesday, July 29, 1998 in the Nevada County PicayuneIn spite of the unusual July heat, the annual Southwest Arkansas Football Camp, held at Prescott, was another success. More than 50 young men (grades 7-12) braved the heat to become better football players at their respective schools. They were drilled on offense, defense, introduced to kicking drills, weight work-out techniques and competed in games and skill tests. In the junior division, for grades 7-8, in the 40-yard dash, Hampton players took first and second, as Brent Avant and Brandon Evans raced past the rest. Jesse McClure of Prescott was third, with Gurdon's Jake Plyler fourth. Next came Brandon Renfro of Mena; Lance Gorman of Hampton; Jeremy Marshall of Hampton; and Chad Graham, Joe Pittman and Brad Glass, all of Prescott. In the obstacle course, Hampton's Avant was again first, with Plyler second for Gurdon. Renfro finished third, with McClure fourth and Gorman fifth. Plyler took the top spot in passing proficiency, with Marshall second and Glass third. Lakeside, from Hot Springs, took the top three places in the JV division (grades 9-10) in the 40-yard dash. Si Hornbeck was first, followed by Jordan McInvale and Ron Skipper. Gurdon's Joe Plyler was next, with Adam Smith of Lakeside after him. Then came Toby Bullock of Prescott, Lakeside's Quincy Hurst, Prescott's Ryan Burdue and Matt Yates, with Todd Giles of Lakeside last. On the obstacle course, Prescott's Matt Greenwood was first, with Lakeside taking the remaining four spots. Skipper was second, Adam O'Neal, third, Smith, fourth, and McInvale fifth. Jarred Lawler of Lakeside won the passing proficiency in the division, with Joe Plyler second and Bullock third. In the 40-yard dash for the varsity players (grades 11-12), Hampton's Jonah Henry was first. He was followed by Gurdon's Brandon Gattis, Pat Westerman of Lakeside, Angelo Haynes and Jared Miller of Prescott, Adam Gooding of Gurdon, Jarrod Yates from Prescott, Brett Weatherford from Lakeside, Texarkana's John R. Lee and Prescott's James McGough. The obstacle course saw Weatherford first, Miller second, Landon Trusty of Lakeside third, Gattis fourth and Westerman fifth. Trusty captured the passing drill, with Haynes and Yates second and third. This year's coaching staff included Lakeside's Gary Segrest and Max Phillips; Eddie Jackson, John Johnston, Ed Tyree and Brian Tuggle of Hampton, Gurdon's John Pace, and Prescott's David Bennett. The staff picked outstanding players for most improved, outstanding camper, leadership, spirit award, weight room leadership and outstanding lifter in the three divisions. For most improved in the junior division, Brad Johnston of Hampton won, with Toby Bullock of Prescott taking the JV title and Flint King earning the crown for Gurdon. Gurdon's Jake Plyler was named outstanding junior camper, with Kyle Jackson taking the JV title for Hampton and Prescott's Yates getting the nod for the varsity crown. Prescott's Craig Teague earned the junior leadership title, with Joe Plyler getting it for Gurdon in the JV slot and Pat Westerman of Lakeside taking the varsity position. Hampton's Brent Avant won the junior spirit award, with Si Hornbeck taking the title for the JV group and Landon Trusty of Lakeside for the seniors. Craig Teague of Prescott won the weight room leadership title in the junior category, with Kyle Jackson taking it for the JV spot from Hampton and Rob Lee of Texarkana earning the senior division title. Brent Avant was the outstanding junior lifter from Hampton, with Gurdon's Kyle King earning the JV crown and Jarrod Yates winning it for Prescott in the varsity slot.
