Beware Of Canine Criminals (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, August 12, 1998 in the Gurdon Times ut the company handling the city's trash pick up will not come onto private property and get the garbage bags. It is currently suggested to use mobile trash cans or leave the bags by the curb. Smith gave the council some good news. He said the city had applied to the Horace C. Cabe Foundation for a grant of $8,000 to buy an animal control truck. The city was approved a grant of $4,000 from the Lewis Cabe Foundation, and a second grant for the same amount from the Horace Cabe group. The council agreed to purchase the truck currently being used by the Gurdon Street Department as it is in good condition. The city will pay market value for the vehicle and look at buying a new one through state purchasing for the street department. The council members were reminded they have to get petitions filled out and returned if they plan to seek reelection in the November General Election. They can begin getting the petitions signed on Aug. 17, with the deadline for returning them to the Clark County Clerk's Office being noon Sept. 4. While only 10 signatures from registered voters in a councilman's specific ward is needed, they were urged to get more signatures in case some of those who signed aren't registered voters. All seats will be open. Emergency warning sirens were also discussed as the meeting came to a close. Smith said they haven't been purchased yet because there isn't enough money amassed from the sales tax passed last November. The electronic sirens the city wants to buy will run about $24,000. The city had planned to borrow $18,000 from the Gurdon Fire Department's capital improvement fund to buy the sirens. The GFD, though, is currently looking at becoming part of the fire net and may purchase a pager system instead of using the phone to contact firemen when needed. This pager system could cost about $8,000, and the capital improvement budget has $26,000 in it. The pager system and sirens could literally wipe this budget out. Still, Smith said, the sirens will be installed before the 1999 tornado season comes around. If all goes well, the sirens could be installed sometime this fall.
