'Opening Our Gates for 98' is the theme of the Clark County Fair to be held September 9- 12.

The main topic of business of the Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club was discussing fair assignments and preparing fair entries. Mattie Talley, Joyce Rutherford and Kathryn Burchfield will be in charge of setting up the club exhibit. Others volunteered to bake items for the kitchen menu.

Valerie Swayze will represent the club in the Fair Queen contest and Morgan Watson in the Little Miss contest. It is an honor to have these young ladies as our contestants.

The August 13th program was to be a club picnic, or do your own thing. Twenty-two members and two visitors chose to dine out at Bowen's Restaurant for a time of fellowship and relaxation.

In reports given: President Jean Toland reported 35 cancer night caps, turbans and bonnets were given to Pam Halbrook of the Hospice program. The remainder will stay with the club to be given out in the local area.

The Diamond Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross recently called upon certified members to help serve food at Point Cedar on DeGray Lake recently, during the drowning disaster. Tootsie Dempsey, Lorece Friemon and Helen Toland volunteered their time to help in this community service.

A fair judging school was held August 5 at the Howard County EHC Center in Nashville. Mary McBride, Betty Cook and Dr. Barbara Holt were instructors in 'household arts.' Instructions on judging bedding items, quilts, rugs, cross stitch, needle point and embroidery were given to those attending the class with hand-out packets in the morning session. In the afternoon, Mary and Betty attended the class on baked goods, taught by Carla Haley, County Extension Agent from Miller County.

Tootsie Dempsey won the door prize and Dianna Bloomfield gave the blessing of the food. Elizabeth Wilson will host the September 17 meeting.
