McNabb Gets PermitPublished Wednesday, August 19, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesTerry McNabb of Okolona was one of 18 Arkansans who was able to get a highly-coveted permit to hunt elk this fall at Jasper's Bradley Park. There are 450 to 500 elk living in the Buffalo River region of northwest Arkansas. The drawings for 20 permits were held August 1 by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. They were the highlights of the Buffalo River Elk Festival. The hunting seasons, first ever for Arkansas, will be five days in late September and five days in early December. Two permits had been issued earlier in the year through fund-raising activities of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, which has assisted the commission with its elk work. The two earlier permits went to Leon Searles of St. Johns, Mich., and to Austin Branscum of Searcy. Other winners August 1 for permits were Joseph Carlock of Hot Springs, Richard Bearden of Pine Bluff, Jimmy Minton of Story, Melvin Farris of Drasco, Stephen Hussman of Little Rock, Lee Jackson of Maumelle, Kenneth Morgan of Mountainburg, Joe Liles of Waldron, Michael Dollar of Scott, Billy Mitleff of Harrisburg, Rory Tipton of Little Rock, Cecil Thompson of Hope, Harold Childers of Lonoke, Jon Gunter of Conway, Vernon Hausman of Paragould, and James Walthall of Bearden. More than 15,000 hunters applied for the 18 permits, with several hundred disqualified for incomplete applications or because of hunting and fishing violations. The applications and permits were free. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
