District Enters Deal With CokeBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, August 26, 1998 in the Gurdon Times Things go better with Coca Cola. At least they will at functions held in conjunction with the Gurdon School District for the next 10 years. The Gurdon School Board, in its regular monthly meeting recently, entered an agreement with Coca Cola to serve only Coke products for the next 10 years. The board had addressed this issue at the July meeting, but tabled making a decision until the Pepsi Cola Co. could be contacted for a bid. Both companies turned in offers to the district, with Coke guaranteeing Gurdon $303,350 over the next 10 years. Pepsi's offer was for $270,000 for the same period. In addition, the board asked the Coke Company to increase its annual scholarship from $250 per year to $1,000, which the soft drink giant did. The company also agreed to increase expenditures for advertising from $500 to $1,000 annually. Other business saw the board approve a working budget for the 1998-99 school year and hire Vivian Overbee and Theresa Jester as aides at Gurdon Primary School. The board also gave Bobby Smithson, district superintendent, permission to borrow $100,000 for 90 days to pay off the contractor for work done on the Cabe Middle School. Smithson said this loan will be repaid with money coming in from property taxes being paid in October. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
