Time Nears For County FairBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, September 2, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune My how time flies. It's already time for the annual Nevada County Fair. This will be the 62nd time the county fair has been held in Prescott. This year's event will be Sept. 22-26 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Again this year there will be something for everyone to do. Beginning Sunday, Sept. 20, items can be entered in the arts, crafts, clothing, baked goods, quilts, household articles, food preservation, fall gardens, field crop and furniture competitions. Registration will be from 1:30-4 p.m. Buildings at the fairgrounds will be open until 4 p.m. so booths can be set up. Monday will see more entering from 8:30-10 a.m. in the aforementioned areas. Judging of the home economics section, fall gardens, field crops, Extension Family and Community Education Clubs along with 4-H and school booths will begin at 12:30 p.m. Once the judging is over, the buildings will be closed. Tuesday opens with a flower show from 7-9 a.m. Those entering this event can enter at these times only. The floral exhibits will be judged at 9 a.m. The Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce community coffee will be held at 10 a.m. at the Potlatch Building on the fairgrounds, to greet the early visitors to the fair. From noon through 5 o'clock, livestock can be entered in the following categories: cattle, sheep, swine, rabbits, goats and 4-H poultry chain. The annual fair parade will turn downtown Prescott into a city of floats at 5 p.m. For more information about the parade, contact Nancy Burke at 887-2237. Once the parade ends, the exhibition buildings will be opened at 6 p.m., along with the first night for the carnival and midway. In addition, the first round of the Fair Pageant will be held at this time, with the area's representative to the Southwest Arkansas District Livestock Show and Rodeo picked in the following categories: baby miss, baby mister and young miss. Monday night will end with the FFA Alumni rodeo at 7 p.m. The fair will open again Wednesday at noon with the exhibits displayed. The midway and carnival opens at 3 o'clock, with armband day from 5-10 p.m. the armbands will be $8 each. The livestock show will kick off at 5 p.m., and this is also the rain date in case the parade is rained out. On Thursday, Sept. 24, the midway will open at 3 p.m., staying open until 10. All rides will be $1 at this time. Once again, the exhibition buildings will open at 5 p.m., while the livestock premium sale will be held at this time as well. Round two of the fair pageant will be held starting at 7 p.m. This will include events for tiny miss, tiny mister and little miss. Friday will be a bit slower as the midway will open at 3 p.m. and the exhibit buildings are slated to open at 5. Saturday, though, should be the big day for the event. At 10 a.m. the day starts with a horse show and the opening of the carnival and midway. Exhibit buildings open at 5 o'clock to get the evening events underway. The final round of pageants will begin at 7 p.m. for the junior miss, teen miss and fair queen contestants. All livestock will be released at 7 o'clock, and the FFA alumni little britches rodeo begins at 7 also for cowboys 18 and under. Sunday has been reserved for the retrieving of items for the various contests and displays. This can be done from 1:30-4 p.m. Those planning to enter the Nevada County Fair Talent Competition must do so by Friday, Sept. 14. This contest is open to people ages 10-20. The winners will advance to the state fair competition so those willing to get on stage need to be sure they don't suffer from stage fright. Contestants must legally reside in the county they will be representing for at least six months before the contest, or be a full-time student who has attended school in the area at least one full semester before the contest. The categories include solo vocals, group vocals, solo instrumentals, group instrumentals, solo dance, group dance and variety. For more information about the talent show, contact Chad Cornelius at 887-2444. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
