Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, September 2, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesWe are still excited about our new building. The joy we are having enjoying is just beyond description. The attitude observed of the students reflect their appreciation and enjoyment of their new school. Just in case you have any doubts, this writer finds it very difficult not to brag, boast, shout, yell, holler or jump up and down for the happiness and pleasure that has been provided for the middle school students, faculty and staff. We have been on the short schedule, due to the hot weather. Monday, however, we went on regular schedule. That seems to indicate that we are really down to business. The fifth graders seem to be adjusting to the big change extremely well. The example of the sixth graders have really been a big help. Of course, the teachers of those grades are to be complimented on having the ability to make each of their students feel right at home. Seventh graders are beginning to indicate that they are no longer primary students. This year is a big step for them, and they seem to be handling it with the determination that it is a hill they can climb. The eighth graders consider themselves to be the 'big kids' in the hall! Now that schedules are finalized, they are getting settled into a routine that they are adjusting to without too much trouble. The CMS Student Council conducted its first meeting of the year with great anticipation of seeing their plans put into action. They will provide the safety patrol in the mornings when the buses are leaving the campus, making sure that the students are not in the route of the buses. They will be sponsoring a year book for the first time for the middle school. The year book staff will be selected by president, Lacey Jester. Assemblies are being planned and a busy year is in the making. We are thrilled to have such a nice media center to go to for research and really enjoy working with Mrs. Jester. Mr. Fallia and Mrs. Jester have worked really hard to get all of the shelves filled with the books and to make the atmosphere so relaxing and comfortable for our students. The flowers and knickknacks really give the media center that special touch that is felt by all of the students. Can you see why attitudes are so positive? Many of you called and asked about the pictures of former Gurdon graduates who graced the walls in the hall of the old middle school, alias, old high school building. Well, they are all safe and secure. Billy Wells deserves a big thank you for being concerned about the pictures and getting the CD&E Club to make it a project to preserve the pictures. The project consists of two wall displays that will hold 40 pictures (full classes) each, dust proof and mounted on white with the desire to have the names under each picture. Now these wall displays are not cheap and your help is greatly needed to help see these treasures preserved. The cost is over $4,000, but this amount can be met with your help. The 'save the pictures' account has been opened at the First State Bank of Gurdon. If you would like to help in this great project, please contribute to the account so that this history can be displayed with pride. Thank you, members of CD&E, for taking charge of such a valued treasure! We will not have classes September 7, as we will observe Labor Day, but when we return we will all be busy making those Classy Moments at Cabe Middle School.
