Marks Brothers ArrestedBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, September 2, 1998 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon police arrested two members of one family on different days recently. According to reports, Sunday Aug. 23 around 6 p.m., officers responded to a call of shots being fired at Fifth and Seahorn. Upon arrival, the officer saw several people standing around outside. He was told a man in a yellow Cadillac had driven by and shot at two boys through the window of the car. The suspect later returned, got out of the car and again fired at the boys, witnesses said. Gurdon Police learned the car belonged to Richard Marks, 28, of Gurdon. The car was found at Fifth and Jackson streets, where officers had it impounded. When Marks came to the police station to get his car, he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Around 3:10 p.m. Monday, officers got a call concerning Carlton Marks, 24, of Gurdon, causing a disturbance at 502 Seahorn. According to reports, Carlton Marks was threatening people in the area with a handgun. It seems he was upset because someone in the neighborhood had called the police on his brother, Richard, Sunday. Carlton Marks was reportedly accusing those there at the time of making the call and pointing the handgun at them. Gurdon City Marshal David Childres said at one point Carlton Marks pointed the weapon at a woman's head and threatened to kill her if she called the police. He left the scene and was stopped on Maple Street about an hour later. Officers obtained a warrant to search his home for the handgun, but instead found a jar with what appeared to be a white powdery residue in it. They also found the same type of residue in a safe and pill bottle. Samples were taken and sent to the Arkansas Crime Lab for analysis. Childres said the substance could be "crack" cocaine. The officers also found a shoebox filled with a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. It, too, was sent in for testing. However, officers failed to find the handgun in question. Carlton Marks was charged with terroristic threatening, aggravated assault and possession of a controlled substance. Because of being out on probation at the time, Richard Marks is being held in the Clark County Jail without bond. Carlton is held on a $7,500 bond.
