Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, September 9, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

We enjoyed our Monday off to observe Labor Day, but we were glad to be back to the 'beautiful educational environment' that is provided for us. I just hope that you do not get tired of reading about our school, because enough cannot be said about how nice it is and how much it means to all who are enjoying it.

The faculty and staff expressed their appreciation to those who helped move 'our rooms' into the new building, as well as those who hung bulletin boards, dry boards, chalk boards and other things for us, and those who came behind us to take out the trash, as boxes were being emptied (for the last time we hope). A potluck lunch was provided in their honor. My goodness the food was just wonderful, but the fellowship of everyone was just super. Thanks, to each for all you did for us! Yes, you too, Mr. Lyons, even if you did fuss at one teacher until she brought you molasses cookies.

Terry, Bryan and Don have really been busy installing the awning over the sidewalk from our building to the cafeteria. The project is almost completed and it already adds so much to the outside look of the building. You can only imagine how much better it will be when completed.

The big 'rally' in the form of a cook-out was enjoyed by at least 400 Gurdon fans. Although it was a little bit warm, at least it did not rain on the event, as it was held at Gus Brown Field.

The Rotary Club is to be thanked for cooking the hamburgers, the primary teachers for serving the food, Piggly Wiggly for the donations made and for each one who attended. The food was great and plenty of it! Billy Tarpley did a superior job as emcee. That just seems to come natural for him. Thanks, Billy! Terry Hughes entertained with two songs and the audience would have enjoyed more. Terry, where was that 'dancing woman' that enjoys your singing so much?

Brad Clark expressed how important it is to have the three-mill increase to pass September 15.

Coach Pace shared his support and explained how the football teams have to be bused over to the field house and football field and how much time it takes and how little time of practice they have in order to get back to school for the next class. This would be such an advantage if the football field and field house could be at the present school location. For Gurdon to have its own track would be really nice.

Mr. Wimberly, band director, explained the importance of the band being able to practice on the football field without having to travel back and forth.

Freddie Horne and Terry Norris entertained with a skit that explained the importance of the three-mill tax becoming a reality.

Susan Norris, primary teacher, and several students informed the audience of how much the three-mill increase would help their school. The roof of the primary school needs replacing. The facility needs new carpet, new furniture, new plumbing, paint, etc. The students, Kelli Pennington, Trevor Stone, Adam Clark, Andre Anderson, Sarah Boyce, Blake Daniels and Drew Griffin, were such an asset to the presentation. You were great!

Members of the pee wee football team, the seventh grade team, as well as the junior and senior high teams were introduced, along with the cheerleaders and band members. These students make various sacrifices to be able to take part in those activities and we are proud of each of them.

Mrs. Clark, seventh and eighth grade English teacher, had her classes write thank you letters to members of the Cabe Foundation for their new school. Each student expressed his own personal thanks and the letters were sent to the Cabe family.

Now that same English teacher attended a class reunion a couple of weeks ago. Not only did she attend in 'old clothes' instead of buying new things to wear for the special occasion, (we asked her not to tell where she works), but we found out that she received applause for the 'break dancing' she is famous for. We are anxious for her to perform for us. What other secrets she has kept from us we do not know, but hopefully we will find out soon.

Thank you for making the article an item of importance to you. Your comments are so special to this writer, and you know I need all of the encouragement I can get. Hopefully you will continue your support for us as we make those Classy Moments at CMS.
