Fair Winners Are AnnouncedPublished Wednesday, September 16, 1998 in the Gurdon TimesBest of show purple ribbon awards at the Clark County Fair went to the educational booths of Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club and the Shining Stars 4-H Club, Barbara Holt of the Extension Service in Arkadelphia said last week. Both exhibits implemented the theme of the fair, "Opening Our Gates in '98." In food preservation, Ruie McCallum won Best of Show in the adult division for muscadine jelly, and Elizabeth Ezell won for canned whole tomatoes in the youth division. Adult Kerr and Ball awards went to Lorene Arnold, Rebecca Nowlin, Pauline Cook, Ruth Ezell, Tori Morehead, Kelli McKinnon and Kristen Land. Winner of the $20 Whelen Springs EHC jelly making award was Kristen Land. In baked goods, Clarice Helms' biscuits and Elizabeth Ezell's cookies received awards. Clothing Best of Show winners were Karen Kikpatrick with a lined vest and Leigh Helms with a summer dress. Needlework adult and youth winners were Cindy Reeves for a framed crocheted piece and Shana McBride for a decorated tissue box cover. Best of Show quilt was a hand pieced and quilted double wedding ring design made by Darlene Hendricks. In counted cross stitch, Amelia Terry won for her framed bird picture. Judged best adult arts and crafts was a wooden Santa Claus head painted by Joy McCarty and the best youth item was a pierced tin lamp shade crafted by Ryan Reeves. In ceramics, porcelain and glass, Betsy Hurst won for her young fisherman doll. Bobby Cook's scroll saw clock won Best of Show in furniture and woodcraft, and Kimberly Bass received the junior award for a painted wooden animal. Green tomatoes won Best of Show in crops for Lorene Arnold and the cantaloupe entered by Elizabeth Ezell. Best of Show in the flower and ornamental plants division were Ludy Perry's vase of widow's tears, and the pink rose brought by Kiimberly Bass.
