Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, September 16, 1998 in the Gurdon Times

It was so nice reading the letters published in the Gurdon Times last week that were written by the seventh and eighth grade students of Mrs. Clark's English classes. It is very evident that the students are very proud of their new building. Their letters were their way of saying 'Thank you' to the Cabe Foundation and Mr. Smithson for making their school one they enjoy bragging about.

Although we had only a four-day week, we really acquired a lot of learning. Mr. Bearden's science classes were studying for a test. Some were heard saying it was easy while other commented it was really a hard test. Maybe that is a way to know who studied.

Mrs. Clark's seventh grade English classes are learning the parts of a business letter. They will be writing to counties in Arkansas requesting information to update the Arkansas Resources in the media center. Each of the students has a county to write to and some have two county seats to request information for the project. The project is an assignment in Mrs. Clingan's seventh grade Arkansas History classes. The two teachers worked together on this particular study and the students received a grade in each class. You will hear more about this special work later.

Silence! Can you imagine ten minutes of silence? Well, this may be difficult to believe, but while Mr. Alexander was eating his lunch in the lounge Mrs. Roe was doing what she is well know for, talking! Mr. Alexander offered her one dollar for just ten minutes of her silence. That is asking a lot of her, but she owed Mrs. McBride 50 cents so she started the 'quiet countdown.' Now Mrs. Roe is special to all of us, but it was agreed that the quiet time was enjoyed by those present. Oh, yes, Mrs. McBride did collect the 50 cents, all of it in pennies!

We are totally aware that a certain sixth grade teacher, whom we will just refer to as J.S., has a way of making her presence known with a scream like you cannot imagine. While the teachers were enjoying their lunch, an innocent, four-legged critter entered the room totally unannounced, and thus preceded to scare J.S. so much that we thought she was going to climb the wall to get away from that poor, little innocent, probably lost his way, critter. Honestly, it is very difficult to know who scared whom the most! Sorry you missed this event, Mrs. Cathey.

The visit of that critter made it possible for us to see a side of Mrs. Morehead that she had kept a secret from us. She was busy using the copier at the time J.S. was screaming and climbing. When she realized what was going on, she pulled the legs of her slacks up to her knees, but never stopped the copier. When asked, "What are you doing with your pants legs pulled up like that?", she replied, " Well, I didn't want that thing running up my leg!" Let me say, it is never a dull moment!

A pep rally was enjoyed Thursday. Those cheerleaders really work hard, long hours to prepare for their performances. With the help of the band, cheerleaders, students and teachers, the gym was rocking. Those fifth graders won the spirit stick for the second week. Good job!

Mrs. Clingan has an intern teacher, Mark Anderson, from Henderson State University. Mr. Anderson will be observing for a while before actually teaching a class. After the students were introduced to their visitor, they made him feel right at home. It is good to have you in class and hope that you enjoy you time with us.

The cooler weather has been appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed, but whatever the weather might be, just remember that we are busy making those Classy Moments at Cabe Middle School.
