the pitch on second down to Lakeside's 28, but the play was called back as Gurdon was guilty of a clip.

Lakeside then jumped offside, giving Gurdon back five of the 15 lost yards. This was followed by a holding call against the Devils.

Things looked bleak for Gurdon as far as scoring went. It was fourth and too much, with the Devils in punt formation.

Lakeside, however, was true to form and ran into the kicker, giving Gurdon new life with an automatic first down at the Lakeside 48.

Gurdon Coach John Pace had substituted freely in the waning moments of the contest, and saw his son, Colby, fumble the ball to the Beavers with 0:48 remaining.

Lakeside found the ball on their own 46. Three plays later, the Beavers fumbled, with Meeks taking the loose ball in for the score.

Disdaining the two-point conversion attempt, the Devils tried to kick the point after, but the snap was high and the ensuing pass incomplete. Still, the Devils were in command 30-8, with 0:37 showing.

Lakeside did little in its final possession as the Devils took win number two on the season.

Unofficial stats showed Gurdon running the ball 32 times for 219 yards. The Devils were one of five in pass attempts for another eight yards, giving the team 227 yards of total offense.

The Devils were flagged six times for 75 yards in the contest, while punting three times for a 32 yard average. The team fumbled three times, losing two.

Allen ran the ball three times for 32 yards and a touchdown. Charles carried the mail 17 times for 145 yards and three scores. Rashun Hopson had four carries for three yards, while Meeks carried once for nine yards.

Hatley ran the ball seven times for 32 total yards, with Joe Plyler getting a carry for minus one yards.

Lakeside statistics were unavailable.

In other games of interest to the Devils, Prescott lost to Hope 21-14; De Queen stomped Stamps 42-12; and Fouke had a field day against Lewisville with a 42-0 win. Dierks and Mineral Springs had open dates Friday night, while Murfreesboro tangled with the Hot Springs Lakeside junior varsity team Saturday.

Last season, the Devils edged the Wolves in a hard-fought contest at Gus Brown Stadium to take the Nevada County Picayune-Gurdon Times Traveling Trophy.

Two years ago, though, when Gurdon traveled to Prescott, the heavens opened as widely as the Wolf offense. The Wolves led 14-0 when the game was called after 10:30 had been played in the first because of weather conditions.

This year, who knows. One thing, though, is for certain these two teams will lock horns for real, doing their best to post a win against the other.

Gurdon will be looking to remain undefeated as it heads into league play, while the Wolves want to rebound and go 2-1 on the season before heading into conference action.

The Devils will head into the contest ranked sixth in the state for class AA teams, while Prescott is unranked.

However, records mean nothing with Gurdon and Prescott meet on the field of battle, regardless of what the sport is. The only thing either team cares about is winning against the other.

Fans will be in for a treat when these two squads square off Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
