Only three people could be bothered to seek office for the Gurdon City Council in the Nov. 3 General Election.

Mickey Jones will be seeking a second term from ward 1, while Gene Flowers will be unopposed in ward 2. Karen Parker will have no opposition from ward 3.

However, for wards 4-6, there are no candidates. Glen Hughes and Philip Giles are not seeking new terms as members of the council.

This means councilmen from these districts will have to be appointed by the Gurdon Mayor. Gurdon Mayor Rick Smith asks anyone interested in being on the council living in these wards to call him.

Other local races will see City Marshal David Childres unopposed and Mayor Rick Smith also being without an opponent for the general election.

Looking at other races in the county, Art Cooper is being challenged by Robert Schee as mayor of Whelen Springs.

The Whelen Springs council could see some changes as most of the incumbents are opposed.

Edith Pierce is unopposed from ward 1. In ward 2, Democrat Odie Young is challenged by independent James W. Sparks. Ward 3 sees Gertrude Cooper, a democrat, opposed by independent Nikki Schee. In ward 4, Democrat Harold Gulledge faces independent candidate Jerry Beck.

Three people are vying for the mayor's chair in Amity. Dr. Chester V. Clark Jr., Royce L. Hancock and Alice R. Schweitzer all seek this office.

The seat for ward three has two candidates, Greg Henthorn and Diane Owens.

Caddo Valley will also have a plethora of choices for the election of local officials.

A trio of candidates seek the mayor's position in Caddo Valley. Ms. Jim Jameson, Willard E. Thomason and Howard Whittle all want the job.

Ward 1 for the council has David Matthews and Bill Ratliff on the ticket, while ward 3 has Jeff Harrison and Rae Priest looking to be elected. In ward 5, Wanda F. Francis, and Karen Roberson are competing. Larry McClain is the lone candidate for ward 1.

Rhonda Rutherford and Frances Troyer are running for the office as the city's treasurer.

None of the races in Gum Springs are contested. Don Green will remain as mayor, with Wanda Green staying as recorder/treasurer. Jimmy C. Perry will represent ward 2, with Gloria Hill being from ward 4 and Lonnie Green from ward 5.

In Okolona, Joy McElhanon will stay on as mayor, with John Hornsby remaining as councilman from ward 1.

One justice of the peace positions are contested. In JP District 1, Democrat Roger Winfield is challenged by Jonathan B. Huber.

Otherwise, the Clark County Quorum Court will remain pretty much unchanged. R.H. "Dick" Batson will represent JP District 3; Juanita "Dot" Curry is in JP District 2; Albert Neal remains in district 4; Bill Moorman will stay in district 5; Bill Conine will be in district 6; John "J.B." Howard is in district 7; Billy C. Kirksey in district 8; Jim Hatley in district 9; Larry Roy Thomerson returns to ward 10; and Mike Cox stays in ward 11.

Randy Hill will be the municipal judge; Judy Beth Hutcherson the county treasurer; Pamela D. King is the new circuit/chancery clerk; Wanda H. Knight is the county assessor; Floyd "Buddy" Manning will be the new county judge; Frank Plasek the constable from the Caddo Township; Troy Tucker stays on as county sheriff; Rhonda Sullivan Williams will be the new county and probate clerk, while Scott J. Wyatt will be the coroner.
