Resolutions, Budgets, Audit Keep City Council Busy (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, September 16, 1998 in the Gurdon Times ew companies are interested in sub-leasing the old hospital, currently leased by Dr. Elton Stewart, who had the idea of turning it into a residential care facility himself. Smith said the hospital would be better for Coleman's needs than Pineview would have, and he (Coleman) has worked out a sub-lease agreement with Dr. Stewart. But, the council, as agreed in the lease contract, must give its blessing before the structure can be sublet. Smith informed the council Dr. Stewart will still be the responsible party for the lease payments. Coleman's long-term goals, Smith said, are to purchase the hospital from the city. There is no risk to the city, Smith told the council as Dr. Stewart is still responsible if the deal falls through. However, when it came time to vote on the measure, Philip Giles, Karen Parker and Gene Flowers voted in favor of the sub-lease, while Mickey Jones abstained, amounting to a no-vote, and Glen Hughes simply voted no. Hughes reasoned when HUGS was trying to get Pineview, it was being done by the same people who are now with Coleman Research and APEX. "They talked a good talk," he said, "and got people's hopes up, but showed nothing." Still, by a simple 3-2 majority, the measure passed and the hospital will be sublet.
