McKenzie House Listed On The National Historic Registry

Published Wednesday, September 23, 1998 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Henry McKenzie House at 324 East Main Street is among four properties around the state that have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the country's official list of historically significant properties, Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP) director Cathy Slater announced.

The AHPP is an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage.

The McKenzie House is a two-story, wood-frame residence that reflects the transition between the Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles of architecture. It was built in 1902 for McKenzie, a local attorney.

"The two-story frame residence exhibits a number of characteristics from both the Queen and Colonial Revival traditions," the National Register nomination says.

The Queen Anne features include the complex symmetrical massing of the house, the steeply pitched roof, the second-story bay projection with corbel brackets and the decorative shingles in the gable ends.

Colonial Revival style details include the modillions in the front and side gables, the wreath and garland motif in the porch gable and the pedimented gable ends.

Also listed were the Gould Jones reservoir at Jasper in Newton County, the C.E. Forrester House at Waldron in Scott County and the Captain Charles C. Henderson House at Arkadelphia in Clark County.

For more information on the National Register of Historic Places program, write AHPP at 1500 Tower Building, 323 Center Street, Little Rock, AR 72201. You may call the agency at 501-324-9880.

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program is the agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage responsible for the identification, evaluation, registration and preservation of the state's cultural resources.

Other agencies in the department are the Arkansas Arts Council, the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, the Arkansas Commemorative Commission, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission and the Arkansas Territorial Restoration.
